FAT?!
Edit 2-15-2014
Well Those ideas Didn’t work.
News and changes:
I’m trying to move to Canada, British Columbia, Vancouver to be exact. I have wanted to move there for years now. It’s cold, the government is more my style, and I just found out that the Medical Services Plan covers sexual reassignment surgery! So if I move there I wouldn’t need to beg for money via the comic anymore! So here is what I’m doing I’m using the $1,500 in donations I have gotten so far to pay off most of the medical bills the insurance company in the USA refused to cover. And I’m going to do a fundraiser to help cover the costs to immigrate to BC.
It costs around $1,400 to get all the paperwork processed and the gas to move there. I can cover most of the costs myself, but it would require me to not do anything but work over the next few months. So if I get donations I’ll update more days a week forever!
$150: Mock Girl 4 days a week
$300: Terra’s Diary 3 days a week
$450: Mock Girl 5 days a week
$600: Terra’s Diary 4 days a week
$750: Mock Girl 6 days a week
$900: Terra’s Diary 5 days a week
$1,000: Mock Girl 7 days a week
$1,100: Make a new comic that updates 1 days a week.
$1,200: New comic that updates 2 days a week.
$1,300: New comic that updates 3 days a week.
$1,400: New comic that updates 4 days a week.
I’m going to do a Live stream, at 5PM (Mountain Daylight Time), where I will be drawing your requests for the Mock Girl or Terra’s Diary characters. You can tweet me (@jadegear) Or email me (terra@terrasnover.com) with the requests. I’ll pick the ones I like and draw em any you can watch!
Then when I’m done with them I’ll post them on my page and twitter. Then I’ll sell the drawings I did for $20 or $15 if you are the one who suggested it (plus shipping).
Okay kids, I have been thinking more and more about making a nonprofit, where fellow artists and I make artwork, comics, etc. to fund-raise for transgender people’s surgery costs. The nonprofit would run kind of like the Humble Bundle where you could donate to the surgeries and/or the contributing artists.
The problem is filling for a nonprofit is around $1,000. So I’m trying to figure out if people would be willing to chip in $10 or more to get things up and running? If I can get people willing to donate close to that amount I’ll spend the time to help all my TG brothers and sisters out there, and make this a thing happen.
Don’t. Don’t do this. See, the problem is this: you’re one of the persons whom the nonprofit is intended to help, i.e. you’d potentially profit from it. That would be a major obstacle to getting your nonprofit organization vetted. If you plan to get personally involved in funding this, do it after you’ve had your own surgery. Doing it any other way just means trouble.
If i started this I was no longer going to fundraise for myself
As noble as your heart is, I would strongly urge giving this some thought in regards to which follows your priorities more so.
Are you the kind of person who would sooner help others than yourself, or do you help others only after making sure your own needs are met.
Frankly, that seems a bit silly.
OK, so things are not going as fast as you would wish. ie, donations are not happening. But money is tight.
You’re a good cartoonist. Great imagination.
Make yourself the best. Splash your cartoons everywhere.
People always need to laugh and they love people who make them laugh.
“And I’m full of empty calories.”
“Wait! You _ARE_ calling me fat!”
If you’re planning to move to BC, I’d strongly urdge you against Vancouver itself and more towards Burnaby, Coquitlam, Surrey and even Abbotsford due to the expensiveness of Van City. All of those cities are within an hour of Vancouver and all except Abbotsford have inexpensive public transit via Skytrain to Vancouver if needed for trans related appointments. Also I believe you need a psycologist’s ok to be approved for GRS. I would recommend Dr Melady Preece who is located in downtown Vancouver about 5-10 min from a Skytrain station.
Vancouver area I should say.
And I already Have all the paperwork on my gender dysphoria So I wouldn’t need the psychologists, but thanks for the reference!
On that note you seem to live out there, know anywhere that would be willing to hire a filthy foreigner like me?
Costco is a good place to work if you get hired for seasonal then hired full time due to benifits. It really comes down to what skills you have and what sort of work you wish to do.
I Really hope you sort it out, though I feel I should inject a needed dose of reality into things RE: moving to Canada.
I have had several friends move, or should I say try to move, to Canada from the US for the friendlier social climate. I’ve also heard of US residents coming to Canada for Treatement/Surgery. The physical move should not be a problem, however:
Getting a VISA so you are legally able to work while in Canada may be a challenge. Bring your portfolio and look for Graphic design jobs – Visas for uncommon/special skills are easier to get/justify. I’m not sure if there is a grace period while job hunting.
Citizenship itself might (will) take significantly longer.
I’ve heard of limited success in immigrating while citing Sexual orientation/Trans status as a factor in your move – Your mileage will definitely Vary.
I’m unsure how BC’s health-care provider handles resident non-citizens. In Ontario, life-threatening emergency care is provided under OHIP (not sure what BC’s equivalent is – healthcare is administrated at a provincial level and each province has different regs/rules), however it gets quite complex beyond that. This could put you an in awkward spot and I suggest you do at least a little research beforehand.
However I’ve been told that non-resident US nationals often find that both prescription medication and medical procedures are much cheaper in Canada/at a Canadian facility.
I Hope you’ve done your research ahead of time, sorted these out, and I’m not raining on your parade. I DO wish you lots of luck and hope you get this sorted.
Also – I should have noted – I’m not an expert in immigration at all – these are my own expierences and annecdotal expierences of friends.
I’m Canadian, and have worked in the US as well as part of my job. I have one friend – with specific job skills – who wanted to move to Canada to be closer to his partner but is no closer to immigration nearly 2 years after applying and he still does not have a visa or a job in his field.
Congratulations on your decision, I love Canada, if my Texas girl partner could handle the cold at all I’d consider it for a move too.
Hey, if you ever need a couch to crash on while apartment/job hunting, you can borrow one of mine for any length of time!
..the last person who did actually moved in. And when we moved, she upgraded from couch to bedroom. And I got moved to couch. I’m a little confused as it all happened. Point is, come steal my furnishings! I’m in Vancouver proper (by the airport but not in Richmond).
Once you set a course, it’s risky to change it. Canada (or any country, including the US) is difficult to get into, takes a while, etc. Money is tight for donations, but (imho) don’t diffuse the money stream into 3 different venues…take care of your needs first (i.e., the $18k for your SRS), then the not-for-profit…because if it weren’t for SRS, would you really be thinking of Canada? Yes, the social climate is better there overall, but there are places in the US which are quite good also. (Seattle being one of them, and within driving distance to Vancouver BC).
Just a thought. fwiw, I would (and have) donated to your SRS fund, but wouldn’t to Canada, because I believe in the SRS goal, but Canada is an indirect route to a worthwhile goal (imho)
MOstly This is a two birds one stone kind of thing. I can both get the SRS and move someplace I have always dreamed living.
